Students in Equatorial Guinea use theater to promote equality and respect.

The Spanish Cultural Centers in Malabo and Bata held the Micro-theatre Competition “For Gender Equality and against Violence” , an initiative that seeks to promote reflection, creativity and commitment of students to a more just and equal society.

The activity scheduled for December 5, 2025 is part of the project “Comprehensive Strengthening of Institutional and Community Mechanisms for the Prevention and Care of Gender Violence in Equatorial Guinea,” implemented in partnership with the NGO ASAMA and funded by the European Union.

To carry out this competition, the collaboration of two renowned experts in theater has been enlisted: Narciso Echuaca, from the NGO Eticultura, who works with the five participating schools in Malabo (Centro María Auxiliadora, Santa Teresita, Pilar Buepoyo, Complejo Educativo Malabo III and Complejo Anejah Lutherking); and Melsy Jandu, in charge of training in Bata with the schools Centro Educativo Diocesano de Bikuy, Colegio Privado Arco Iris, Complejo Educativo de Nkoantoma, Complejo Educativo de Mondong and Complejo Educativo de Movoho.

During October, auditions were held at each school, selecting between 7 and 12 students per group. In November, the school teams will participate in two weekly rehearsals, accompanied by their instructors and with the ongoing support of the FRS team, to prepare their performances.

Beyond the competition, the goal is for young people to reflect on equality, coexistence, and respect, while strengthening their personal skills, teamwork abilities, and artistic expression. It’s worth noting that the themes of gender-based violence prevention addressed in these plays will stem from the students’ own lived experiences.

The students’ enthusiasm and the instructors’ dedication have made this process an enriching and educational experience. At FRS, we celebrate the effort, creativity, and enthusiasm of all the participants, who are now preparing to share their work on December 5th.
